Abstract: The primary objective of the Supervising Scientist is to protect the environment of the Alligator Rivers Region in the Northern Territory from the potential impacts of uranium mining activities, including uranium extraction and processing operations at the Ranger uranium mine (Ranger). The Supervising Scientist role was established in under the Environment Protection (Alligator. The Ranger Uranium Environmental Inquiry (known as the Fox inquiry) recommended that mining begin at the Ranger site. It also said that Jabiluka and Koongarra sites should be developed, and that a town be built to support the mines.(Fox et al. , ).
